http://www.teachthought.com/technology/63-things-every-student-should-know-in-a-digital-world/
From TeachThought this week is Terry Heick's interesting article about the changing things students need to know in an increasingly connected digital world. He has devised 13 categories and 63 ideas and put them all together in a list. Yes, 63 ideas does seem overkill but when you  read through them all, they do make sense and are worthwhile inclusions.Click on the image above to acess the list.

Learning Intentions

Last year I posted about the Education Services Australia's Assessment for Learning site.I thought that it would be worth mentioning it again because one of its 7 Professional Learning modules is on
Learning Intentions. It's a fantastic module that explains clearly and succintly what Learning Intentions  and Success Criteria are all about. I particularly like the examples.
Click on Learning Modules to access it.

The ISC now has in its Teacher Reference collection the Education Services Australia's  Assessment For Learning DVD's that focus on
  • Strategic questioning
  • Effective feedback
  • Peer feedback and student self assessment
  •

Macquarie Online Dictionary

http://www.macquariedictionary.com.au/
All students in Garnsey Campus now have at their disposal the Macquarie Online Dictionary which can be accessed via the ISC portal space and also via the Online Reference Centre in the ISC Libguides. It is a paid subscription that has many features such as :

  • Easy interactive searching of over 138,000 words and phrases and over 210,000 definitions
  • Annual update of new words. It contains 1,000's of new words such as fiscal cliff, green tap, hobo glove and mummy blog!
  • words relating to science, technology and business such as guanxi, growth hacking and crowd sourcing
  • words and phrases from regional Australia gathered from Australian Word Map
  • etymologies for words
  • grammar and punction guides and audio pronunciations
  • Word of the Day, Aussie Word of the Week and Word of the Year

Just out of interest, the Macquarie Dictionary Committe's 2013 winner of Word of the Year was "infovore". It's a person who craves information, especially one who takes advantage of their ready access to it on digital devices.I am sure you will know many of these! The Committe thought these people were in danger of becoming addicted to instant information and this reflected a significant change in how we conduct our lives.
The People's Choice for 2013 was a "onesie". Need I say anything more!
